Freud’s Desk Chair

January 22, 2012

This image is from David Pescovitz’ blog and shows an unusual early desk chair of Sigmund Freud’s.

David Cronenberg used a replica of the chair in his film, A Dangerous Method, which I have not seen yet.

Last February I did have the opportunity to see up close Thomas Jefferson’s swivel chair at Monticello. Not a contemporary piece but very original in its use of casters of the type used in rope-hung windows allowing the top or seat to swivel on its base.

I designed the Gillian Chair a few years ago for a client who wanted comfortable and moveable chairs for their television and movie watching room. The adjustable back allows additional tilt beyond the 19 degrees which the seat mechanism allows. The Floating Back is covered with a thin leather pad and the neck rest can be easily moved to the correct position for the sitter. The seat cushion is built upon Baltic birch plywood with Italian Elastibelt strapping.
