Madrone Bench 2

March 29, 2011

In 1995 I harvested a dying madrone tree below our house here in the Sierra Nevada foothills. I milled the tree and dried the wood and it lay around for many years until a few weeks ago I decided to make something from this distinctive board. It turns out that this tree has evidence of the 1911 forest fire that ravaged this area. The tree responded to the fire with epicormic branching (sprouts) that created some interesting figure and color. Knowing when the tree was cut I was able to count the growth rings back and discover the year of the epicormic buds and link the ring to the historically documented forest fire.
