The St. Paul Settee was created for a couple from, yes, St. Paul, Minnesota, who invite guests to their house for chamber music recitals. Most of the couple's furniture was designed and made by George Nakashima, so the settee needed to work with Nakashima's design sense, as well as accommodate two guests side by side who may not know each other. I guess it's a not-so-love seat or, perhaps, a love-tinged-with-personal-space seat. The wood is figured California black walnut from a tree that grew on a farm near Zamora, California. This detail provides a closeup of the floating back slats. The Seeger Sofa is part of the suite of furniture I designed and built for a house originally built in 1911 by architect Bernard Maybeck (see Seeger Recliner and links for more information). At the time, good lighting was often sacrificed for other aesthetic considerations--the redwood panels on the interior walls are beautiful but dark. The fiddleback maple and aluminum of the sofa help to lighten up the room and the upholstery helps to enliven it. Fiddleback maple, aluminum, and fabric upholstery This larger three-seat version of the St. Paul Settee was created for client Ann Stone. Walnut, cherry and maple are great woods for this design.

Before I was familiar with Frank Lloyd Wright's barrel chair, I designed this period piece. I didn't intend to build a Mission or Prairie Style chair, but that seems to be where the Brenda Chair falls. The Brenda Table, a companion to the Brenda Chair, was commissioned by a couple who asked me to create an end table for display of their Tiffany lamp.
