Richman Desk Chair

These chairs are workhorses built to be used at the computer, desk, and drafting table. When I first turned my attention from living room and dining chairs to a working desk chair, I spent a year buying and testing every desk chair base I could find. I even worked with a machinist to create one of my own. For comfort, durability, and looks, I believe the base I’m using now is the best on the market. A nitrogen-filled gas cylinder in the base column allows for height adjustment. A strong adjustable spring mounted on the underside of the chair seat lends the chair a cushioned tilt, described by many sitters as “floating.” The chair tilts 19° from upright and can be locked into position at any angle. The carved wooden handles on the adjustment mechanisms are by Holly Tornheim, an accomplished craftswoman. California black walnut.
