Bob Erickson built his shop in 1973 using lumber from trees he cut on his property and took to a local sawmill for milling. Located in a forest of pine, oak and Pacific madrone, the shop is far from the power grid, so a wood-burning heat stove and electricity from a Solar array and a back-up diesel generator serve its energy needs.
Two skilled craftsmen and an exprienced finisher work part-time alongside Erickson in the shop, turning out a total of 75 pieces a year. Each person brings a distinct approach to the job, which adds to the overall quality of each handmade chair.
Erickson spends about two months a year designing new pieces of furniture and making their prototypes, and the rest of the time working on orders. |
